Anyone else really enjoy reading build threads on the same/similar car as one you own? I am just always loving the different ideas that people come up with and sometimes the awesome photos that people take. This one in parcticular was of a 2010 STi hatch and while its certainly a different car than my 2006 STi sedan, it is still very relevant to me. I also have quite different tastes but some similar interests so it’s just cool to see some of the stuff posted. Last post was like three years ago so I guess its not getting updates anymore. Anyways, here is the link if you like build threads:

Anyone have some cool build threads they have found? I always end up going down a rabbit hole just reading everything when I find one...

I spend way too much time looking at 335i build threads. It's dangerous, I barely am able to stop myself from dropping a few thousand on parts and just making my car a monster lol.

90% of modern “build threads”
-off the s
helf coil overs
-$4,000 wheels on a $3,000 car
-some questionable plstidiping
-straight pipe exhaust
-winder stickers

To some degree I can enjoy those though. I'm not heavily into modifying a car, just minor stuff and then it's more about what someone does with the car that interests me. I could care less about a detailed 50 pages of how someone ported out a cylinder at home and did an LS swap in a weekend. Like that stuff is really cool but just not something I would do myself. Some of the simple bolt on stuff is more relevant to me. But yeah if it's complete rice, then it's just bullshit lol.

Yeah that’s always the downside. But it’s the excitement of wanting to go drop thousands of dollars on parts that makes it fun. Actually doing that is prevented by simply not having the money to do so haha. At least with just reading a thread, I can live vicariously through the other owner. But yeah this thread in particular convinced me that I need to commit to my winter setup that I’ve been meaning to get. Roof rack, another set of wheels, and snow tires. I'm really jealous of the practicality of the hatch too but at least I like how the sedan looks more though.

Honestly, they always stress me out about halfway through because my practical side is like “for that time commitment, you could do so much more!” (Or “for that cash outlay, you could have just bought the car you wanted!”)
Still, so much knowledge comes from people willing to DIY the tough stuff.

There are some EPIC transformation projects linked on this website. In my opinion b olt-on threads are easier captured in the Speedhunters picture format

Build threads are some of my favorite things. That is , until this happens:

I like them, but I’m always worried about thieves tracking down unsuspecting enthusiasts . I do watch b is for build, which is entertaining.

Yeah, that is exactly why I would never want to make a detailed build thread like that for myself. Especially if I was showing images of where I live or anything like that.

The photobucket masacre has TOTALLY ruined miata.net. There were sooooo many quintesential threads on there with very detailed instructional photos for basic maintenance. Like sure I can use my Haynes manual and Miatas are not that hard to work on. But those threads just made it so much simpler and easier to follow. And so many of them are wayyyy too old so nobody is going to bother fixing them. It is like a generation of knowledge lost.

I think that is what entertains me even more. Because it is like reading a fantasy novel or something of an alternate life. Like yeah I probably COULD afford to buy all of those parts. But then I wouldnt be able to afford to go on a Europe vacation or do as much skiing as I like or as many track days. I’m more about paying for experiences so the practical side of me prevents me from dropping lots of coin into car mods. But I sure would love to!

I feel like I am about to get very very lost in there lol. Just found a build thread in there on an Evo 8 swapped Miata. That is awesome. Makes me want to take the motor from my Sti and put it in my Miata in some fantasy world. That would be amazing.

Oh man. Saving that one for later.
I'm guessing you've seen Ryan Passey's LFX Miata build thread? It's by far the best build thread I've seen, starting from him racing locally with a budget built beater Miata, to being one of the best Miata racers out there, destroying time attack records against Rwd and Awd classes.

I get that with the Spit. For the amount I’ve spent on it so far, I could have bought a light project/recommission Bertone GTV.
I tend to console myself with the assertion that no-one has done a unibody Spitfire before which makes me feel a little better :) it’s easier to justify when someone asks ‘why didn’t you just buy one’ when I can answer ‘you can’t buy them. No-one’s made it before’ :)

Yeah build threads are life :) we should have a build thread register here on oppo :)
